How Bail Bonds Work In Placer County

Bail bonds are governed by the Department of Insurance, ensuring that all bail bond agents charge a consistent premium, which is set at 10% of the bail amount. This fee is non-refundable and is considered used once the defendant is released from jail. In certain cases, small discounts may apply, such as if the defendant already has a private attorney on retainer.

Here’s how the process typically unfolds:

Arrest and Bail Setting: When a defendant is arrested, a judge determines the bail amount based on the charges. Once the defendant is booked into jail, they usually contact a family member or friend for help.

Two Options for the Individual:

  • Option 1: Cash Bail: The individual can pay the full bail amount directly to the jail. For example, if the bail is set at $25,000, they can provide $25,000 in cash. Once the defendant has met all court obligations, the entire amount is refunded to the individual who posted the bail.
  • Option 2: Bail Bondsman: The individual can choose to contact a bail bondsman. The bail bondsman charges a fee of 10% of the bail amount—in this example, $2,500. By co-signing with the bail bondsman, the individual agrees to be responsible for the full bail amount if the defendant fails to appear in court. If the defendant misses a court date, the bail bondsman and the co-signer have 181 days to locate and surrender the defendant to avoid being liable for the full $25,000.

This process ensures that defendants can secure their release from jail while awaiting trial, but it also comes with financial responsibilities for those who co-sign on the bail bond.

Qualifications
for Posting Bail

The qualifications for co-signing a bail bond can vary depending on the specific case. Generally, for bail amounts of $25,000 or more, the co-signer must provide real estate property as collateral. This means they need to present their most recent property tax bill, and the individual listed on that tax bill must be present to co-sign the bail bond.

Bail Bond Fees and Payment Methods

Bail bond fees can be paid using cash, credit/debit cards, money orders, or cashier’s checks. In some cases, personal checks may be accepted with proof of financial stability.

If you have retained legal counsel, you qualify for a reduced bail bond rate of 8%. To take advantage of this, have your attorney contact us at 530-342-6288.

According to California law, the maximum fee for a bail bond is 10% of the bail amount. For example, if a judge sets bail at $25,000 and you don't have this amount available, you or a co-signer will need to pay a non-refundable premium of $2,500 to a bail bondsman to secure the release.

We are proud to provide affordable bail bonds, and offer discounts of 10% to 30% on the premium for qualified individuals, which can lead to significant savings.

Premium Rates: The lowest legally filed premium rate is 7% for attorney-client referrals. Bail bonds in California are regulated by the Department of Insurance. For more information, visit California Department of Insurance.

*Chico Bail Bonds may offer payment plan options in some cases. Minimum bail for a payment plan is $25,000 and will be considered on a case by case basis. Payment plans would include at least 50% payment down with the balance to be paid in 6 monthly installments.
